Use the Crosswalk Next Time

A 19-year old in Halifax, Nova Scotia, was hit by a car and suffered minor injuries. He was trying to cross Quinpool Road and couldn’t be bothered to cross in a crosswalk. As a result of his failure to use the crosswalk he was charged with failing to yield to a vehicle. Constable Brian Palmeter said, “It’s unfortunate the person got hurt, but that doesn’t negate their responsibility for following the rules and crossing properly.” He continued, “If the pedestrian had been at a crosswalk, we would have charged the driver. In this case, the pedestrian — based on their actions — caused the accident.”

I have to admit that I got a kick out of this. It’s about damn time that somebody is charged with jaywalking. How many times have you been driving and some idiot decides to cross the street right in front of you, forcing you to stop for them? I know it’s happened to me more times than I can count. Crosswalks are there for a reason. Use them! And in places where there are no crosswalks, make sure there are no cars coming before you decided to step out into the street. Common sense people! I think this 19-year old might think twice before ignoring the crosswalk and stepping into the street into oncoming traffic. Or maybe not.
