Hospital 1, Illegal Immigrant 0

First, a little background. Luis Jiminez is an illegal immigrant from Guatemala who was seriously injured by a drunk driver in 2000 in Florida. The drunk driver hit the van Jiminez was riding in, leaving him a paraplegic. He remained in a vegetative state for a year. Now he has the cognitive ability of a fourth grader. For three years the hospital provided care for him at a cost of $1.5 million. I think that’s worth repeating. The cost of his care (that he did not pay a penny of) was $1.5 million (the non-profit hospital is stuck eating this cost as there is no reimbursement for caring for illegal immigrants). The hospital couldn’t find a rehabilitation center willing to take him. Finally, the hospital received a letter from the Guatemalan minister of health saying that Guatemala would be able to care for him. A county judge then gave the hospital the OK to move him, so the hospital spent $30,000 on a chartered flight to return him to Guatemala.

Jiminez’s cousin and legal guardian, Montejo Gaspar, originally supported moving Jiminez back to Guatemala. Then he changed his mind. Now he’s suing the hospital for $1 million claiming “false imprisonment” when the hospital moved him back to Guatemala. It’s not enough that the hospital provided care for his cousin for three years at a cost of $1.5 million. No. Let’s try to get as much as possible out of the hospital. Greedy fuck!

Thankfully sanity prevailed, and the members of the jury ruled in favor of the hospital. Not pleased with the decision, Gaspar said, “I don’t know why that jury didn’t recognize the injustice of what was done.” Maybe they did recognize the injustice. However, the injustice wasn’t committed by the hospital. It was committed by an illegal immigrant and his cousin. Seriously, your cousin was provided with $1.5 million worth of care. And he was here illegally. Really, do I need to say more? You should both be thankful he received the care that he did. He received better care than a lot of the citizens of this country get.
